Front End Solutions

Costain offers conceptual and front end design services through its dedicated front end solutions group. The group is managed by a core of process specialists who have many years' combined experience in delivering projects using Costain's cryogenic techniques. Costain can demonstrate many examples of the benefits of front end studies developing into major projects.

It was our front end solutions group who pioneered Costain’s entry into the Floating LNG market when it was contracted to conduct a study on behalf of the UK department of energy which was published at OTC (Offshore Technology Conference) in 1981.
 
Since then the group has been engaged in further developmental and feasibility studies for floating LNG on behalf of a range of customers.

Topsides Engineering and Project Management

 

Costain provides a complete service for topsides, from initial concept and front end studies through to detailed design, engineering and procurement, as well as project management services to satisfy customers’ requirements.

 

Costain has a proven multi-discipline design capability over a wide range of industries and engineering activities. This capability is provided by the expertise of engineering and construction personnel who have accumulated many years experience in the following disciplines:
 
 - Process engineering
 - Mechanical engineering
 - Electrical engineering
 - Instrumentation and control engineering
 - Structural engineering
 
As an example of the range of engineering services and systems used by a particular engineering discipline, the Process Engineering Group covers process and technology development, front end engineering design, design studies, process selection and optimisation, heat and material balances, equipment design and specification, utilities design, engineering line diagrams, safety studies, hazard and operability reviews, plant operating and control philosophy, plant layout, commissioning support and operator training.
 
The process design function makes extensive use of advanced process modelling programs. Costain has extensive in-house prediction programs for cryogenic processing covering multi-component thermodynamic and physical properties. The specification and design of unit operations is covered by a wide range of in-house and proprietary designs.
 
All engineering activity is carried out under Costain’s rigorous project management systems and procedures, which encompass SHE, QA and cost control processes.

Costain has extensive experience in providing gas processing solutions across a range of industries, using in-house cryogenic separation and liquefaction technologies:
 
- Natural gas processing including nitrogen rejection, NGL recovery and liquefaction
- Air separation and liquefaction
- Refinery and petrochemical gas processing
- Synthesis gas separation
- Ammonia plant purge gas recovery
 
Conceptual and front end engineering skills are complemented by a full capability for engineering, design and supply of cryogenic equipment, associated pre-treatment modules and machinery.
